Janas Rink - New Management

As some of you may have heard, there is a new rink management company running Janas.  (Yeah!!!)   The company is Shamrock Rink Management and they are also taking over rink management for Graf Rink in Newburyport and already manage rinks in Everett (Allied Veteran’s Memorial Rink) and Wilmington (Ristuccia Arena).

I met in person with the owner last night to discuss his plans and confirm our program's future there. I walked away excited about his plans to improve Janas and believe that GLYSA will continue to be a primary tenant of the facility.

Shamrock just took over management in last couple weeks and is now thoroughly cataloging the condition of the rink and list of items that need attention.   They need to work with the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) as they own the rink and will be involved in some of the capital improvement projects and funding.   Shamrock and DCR have been in Janas a couple times this week going through the status of everything.   They will develop a multi-year project plan for improvements and cited the Fenway Park model as an example where once season ends they start with bigger projects like replacing flooring (can’t do now, too late).

There will be improvements in place by September when the building opens and some of that work is already beginning.  New doors have already been ordered, scraping and painting the ice floor is planned, painting and updating the lobby is scheduled to begin next week, and they have equipment to address fog issues we’ve all experienced at Janas before.

Our GLYSA program should have our same ice hours as last season and the rental rate is not increasing for this season!

I’m hopeful we can build a relationship and partnership with Shamrock that we weren’t able to maintain with the prior management company.   GLYSA board members will meet with the Shamrock management later this summer and will report back with more details on changes happening.

If you have any questions please let me know (  ) or feel free to contact any board member.

Richard Conley

GLYSA Upcoming Events

Hello GLYSA Hockey Family ---  While our season has officially ended, the Board of Directors and other volunteers are helping to plan out the 2017-18 season.   We are working thru the process to get ice rented, teams entered into Valley Hockey League, uniforms and socks ordered, and schedules set for the next season.   There is a lot to do, but we are confident we will be ready for another fantastic hockey season.

Here are a couple events and activities we want you to share with all our members:

  • Summer Skills starts July 13th.     Registration is now open and players outside of GLYSA are also welcome to participate.    Register early to save $$.   Cost is $100 if you register before June 1st as the price goes up to $125 after that date.   See more details and register on the GLYSA website.

  • Golf Tournament has been set for Thursday, September, 28th.   This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we need everyone to be involved.   This is a great day of golf at the Four Oaks Country Club followed by an evening dinner and raffle.  Please consider helping secure sponsors or playing in this fun event.  See the Golf Tournament web page to register or sponsor.

  • Online Store (Coming Soon)  - Within next couple weeks we plan to open an online store thru TSR for you to purchase GLYSA apparel and other hockey products.    There will be a large selection of team outerwear, shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and training apparel, plus helmets and gloves at team discounted prices.   And new this year we are offering hockey pants and shells that have our GLYSA logo embroidered.    We will send another announcement once the store is open.  The online store will only be open for a couple weeks so that orders can be placed and delivered by the start of the season in September.

If you have any questions or feeback please let us know.

Regards,

GLYSA Board of Directors
